We're in the middle of a series of tips for ways to cope with times of constant demand.
They're Mindfulness skills, really, and Mindfulness will help you stay connected to the present moment.
They're Mindfulness skills, really, and Mindfulness will help you stay connected to the present moment.
They will help you be more relaxed, they will help you be more productive, they'll help your wellbeing in all sorts of ways.
This week's tip is particularly useful when you're doing routine jobs, which is when your mind tends to wander, and that is to stay focused wherever there is movement. My husband was taught this skill using painting, focusing between the brush and paper.
Ask yourself, where is the movement?
So, if you're using your hands – if you're at the computer, for example – keep your awareness on your hands, particularly on the interface between your fingers and the keys.
If you're at the gym, if you're exercising, focus on the muscles that are moving and in your breath. If you're walking, focus with your feet, with the feel of the muscles in your legs and feet.
Whatever it is you're doing, when you discover your mind has wandered, take your awareness back into whichever part of your body is moving. For many of us, a lot of the time it will be your hands.
That's this week's tip. Share it around, pop some comments in the box below and I look forward to seeing you next week.
